A few days before leaving for Spring Break, Bucknell was visited by four influential, optimistic, world-changing, entertaining friends—Ben, Dave, Duncan, and Jonnie—also known as the stars of MTV’s The Buried Life.
If you’ve never seen the show, you’re missing out. The show follows these friends across the country as they ask themselves and others, “What do you want to do before you die?” We’ve watched them sneak into a party at the Playboy Mansion (#6 on their list), ask out the girl of their dreams (#59), and Streak a Stadium and [try to] get away with it (#50). In addition to crossing off the dreams on their list, they turned their soul-searching, adventure-seeking escapades into an inspirational outreach effort. The friends have pledged that for everything they can cross off of their list, they will help a stranger cross something off on their own list. When watching these twenty-something year-old guys put so much time and energy into reuniting a family or helping a little girl overcome her fear of roller coasters, the TV show becomes an inspirational reminder of the good and happiness in the world.
Students gathered in the Weis Center that night to listen to the Ben, Dave, Duncan, and Jonnie discuss their journey. They started at the beginning of their adventure, long before the MTV show was made. These guys were just a couple college kids who realized that they could be doing more with their lives. They wanted to explore the real world and meet people who had experienced great things in their lives. Through diligence and dedication they started to really make things happen.
They told us a story about a man that they met in the early years of the project. This man had once been homeless for some time and he told them about how he wished he could bring pizzas to the homeless shelter he had once stayed at. He explained that he always loved when generous people did this when he was staying there; it reminded him that he was not forgotten and that there was still hope for him. After talking more with this man, the friends discovered that there was more they could do for him. He was trying to run a successful business, but his truck was no longer functional. Ben, Dave, Duncan, and Jonnie did everything they could to raise the funds to buy a new truck. After many unsuccessful attempts, the friends made one last effort to find a truck. They met with a car dealer and explained the man’s story. They offered all the money they had for the cheapest truck they could get. Even though they did not have nearly enough money to buy this vehicle, the dealer gave it to them! He was touched by the man’s story and impressed by the friends’ efforts to help him out.
After telling us this story, one of the guys on stage said “It is amazing what people will do when you give them a chance to be a hero.” Their story proves this. Not only did the car dealer become a hero, but they did too. They continue to be heroes every time they create another story just like this one. And they enable others to become heroes as well.
Their story is inspirational. They’re simply a group of guys who wanted to do something fun and exciting. Along the way, they’ve managed to impact so many lives and make the world an even better place.
